EcoMtn Fitness: Detox Yoga

Even if we fill our homes with every eco-friendly product there is and buy only organic foods, we still live in a world that is filled with toxins. There is no way to completely escape this reality (unless you choose to live in an actual bubble, which I wouldn’t advise. That’s extreme guys). But there are several different things we can do to help our body get those nasty toxins out. Wouldn't you know it, one of those things happens to be one of my favorite activities: yoga.

Yoga can provide you with so many different benefits. Today we are going to talk about how it can help you detox. Yoga helps your body flush out toxins, get your blood moving and cleanse your lymphatic system.  Below, I show you 4 simple poses that give your body a quick little detox anytime you want one.  (Remember to always move with ease and to never force a pose if it gives you any pain. Any version of these poses will give you the same benefit, so modify where needed.)

Revolved Chair Pose: Begin in a standing position. Sit back like you are going to sit in a chair and twist to the right and hook your left elbow on the outside of your right leg. and hold. Take 5 deep breaths. Release and repeat on the opposite side.

Detox Benefits: In addition to improving the health of the spine and vertebrae, this asana stimulates the liver, spleen, and digestive system, while toning the abdominals and improving the elimination process

Eagle Pose:  Start standing, then bend the knees and cross the right over the left. Try to get the toes curled around the standing calf, but don't worry if you can't get them there yet. Take the arms out to your side and cross the left over the right. (I know this sounds so confusing but use the picture for reference.) Hold for 5 breaths. Release and repeat on the other side.

Detox Benefits: In addition to stretching the ankles and calves, this asana stretches the thighs, hips and shoulders and upper back. By firmly pressing the thighs together, deeper circulation is supported in the legs which helps flush out the blood and lymph system.

Seated twist: begin in a seated position. Cross your right leg over your left with your right foot flat on the ground. Gently twist to the right while hooking your left elbow on the outside of your right knee. Gently look out over your right shoulder. Take 5 deep breaths, release and repeat on the opposite side.

Detox Benefits: this pose helps stimulate digestion and remove impurities of the body. As the abdominal organs are squeezed, the kidney and liver are stimulated. When the twist is released, blood then enters the organs.

Wide legged forward bend: Start in a standing position with your feet wider than shoulder distance apart. Clasp your hands behind your back and pull down gently to open your shoulders and chest. Keep a flat back for as long as possible as you begin to fold forward. Let your arms fall naturally as gravity does its job. Take 5-7 deep breaths. Gently release your arms, place your hands on your hips and slowly rise back to standing.

Detox Benefits: this pose opens tight hamstrings, allowing your head to fall below your heart also reverses the pull of gravity, encouraging circulation of blood throughout the body as well as fluid to your filtering lymph nodes. The folding motion also squeezes the belly, which moves things along for digestion

Because these poses are so simple you can truly bust them out anytime, anywhere. So, I'd like to challenge you to try them once a day for a week. While you are breathing deep, really imagine your body wringing out the toxins like a washcloth and don't forget to drink lots of water after as any sort of detoxing can dehydrate you!
