The Incredible Soap Nut: Making Your Laundry Clean & Green

Hi guys! I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself since you will be seeing and hearing a lot from me on this little space. My name is Keisha (Kay-Sha) and I am the Blog Editor and Social Media Manager for Eco Mountain. I live in Denver with my cute, guitar playing husband and our dog Luna. For the last 5 years my passion for clean, eco-friendly living has really grown. The more I have learned about what is in the everyday products we use and foods we eat the more I have a desire to find healthy alternatives. This passion has infiltrated my entire life (just ask my husband…) and I am so excited to get to tell you about so many amazing products and practices that make that kind of life easy and possible!

I don’t know about you, but my laundry pile never seems to go away. I do countless loads and I usually don’t think twice about it. I throw the clothes and detergent in and bam, I’m off to the next task. But, when I really did stop to think about it, I realized that this thing that I do so much of is one of the most basic and loving things I can give to my little family: clean clothes. After thinking about it like this, I found myself wanting to find a more earth-loving and healthy way to wash our clothes.  Most name brand detergents are full of so many chemicals we can’t even pronounce and that can be the cause of major skin irritation. This is not the kind of thing I want to put on the clothes my family wears every day. There has to be a better way.

Surprise! There is a better way and I’m about to tell you about it! (I bet you didn't see that one coming.)

Enter, the Soap Nut.

The Soap Nut is actually a berry shell, grown in the Himalayas, which naturally contains a soap called Saponin. Saponin is a natural cleaner that breaks the water barrier allowing it to get into the fibers of your clothes and lift the dirt! Amazing right? This thing that can clean our clothes is actually found 100% in nature!!  Soap Nuts are so gentle on clothes and skin that they are the perfect solution for those with sensitive skin, allergies, eczema and psoriasis. They are also the perfect solution for those with babies who are looking for something gentle yet effective.

I personally love these little soapy berries. My experience with them has been wonderful so far. First off, they are so simple to use! All you have to do is put about four Soap Nuts into this cute little cloth bag, tie it up and toss it in your machine. Then, continue on with your normal clothes washing ways. When your clothes are all clean and happy, you just find your bag of nuts, take it out and set it to the side. You can re-use the same bag of Soap Nuts up to ten times!! Second, they really work! My clothes have turned out just as clean as ever! Plus, they double as a fabric softener so I don’t have to add anything else to my laundry to get soft static free clothes. They are seriously so dreamy. And, since Soap Nuts are technically not “nuts” and are actually berries there is no need to be concerned if someone in your household has nut allergies. They have been tested and are 100% nut allergy safe!

I only have one warning. Don’t forget to find and remove your bag before just mindlessly throwing your clothes into the dryer. Your precious nuts will get ruined and you will be sad. Or so I’ve heard, you know, from a friend….

If you are having a hard time picturing how some dried berries can wash your clothes, I totally get it. I have posted a video below from the company EcoNuts. They actually put a GoPro into a washing machine so you can see firsthand how the berries work! It’s fascinating.
